Chapter Twenty

Mono-Atomic Gold

Lian looked across his bedroom at his school bag lying on the floor. He walked over, lifted the front flap, and slid the small tube out. He held the tube between his thumb and index finger and brought it up to the light on his desk. He could barely make out some tiny yellow-gold specks settling on the bottom. He shook the tube lightly and bent forward so close he could feel his eyelash brush the side of the tube when he blinked. Some of the gold specks swirled around at the top and slowly descended back toward the bottom.

Lian stood up straight, still holding the tube out in front of him. He still couldn't believe they were expected to drink this, but figured the whole class was doing the experiment, so this had to be safe. As he walked into his bathroom, he pulled the cork from the top of the test tube, and carefully filled it to the top with water. Lian then put the top back on the tube, checked his watch, and started to vigorously shake the vial. At the two-minute mark he studied the gold concoction once again.

"Well, here goes nothing," Lian proclaimed out loud to boost his confidence, as he removed the lid to the tube, threw his head back, and swiftly drank all of the contents. As he put the lid back on the test tube, Professor Cordovak's words about needing a full report flashed through his mind. He pulled out his tablet and set it on the desk as he sat down in his desk chair. "A full report…" he thumped his fingers lightly on the desk as he sat staring at the blank screen. "A report... about what?" He didn't feel anything.

Lian looked at the time, leaned back in his chair, and sat there a few more minutes. He then scooted his chair out from the desk, got up quickly, and walked toward his bed. That movement suddenly made the room whirl in front of him. Dizziness washed over him, and he felt himself falling. Lian's body twisted and he landed hard on his bed, face up and unconsciously blinking his eyes slowly as white lights zapped peripherally at every corner of his vision. A sound like a train approaching was getting louder and louder. The light picked up speed, and he rocked his body back and forth, rubbing his eyes as images he couldn't make out flashed quickly past him. Lian was flying…he felt like he was actually flying. The noise was getting even louder, but his body felt so light, he thought he could simply fly above and out of range of the sound.

All at once the images and the deafening sound stopped. Complete silence. Lian raised his head slowly and sat up, and opened his eyes. He was now sitting on a floor behind a room full of people in chairs with their backs facing him. Disoriented, he stood up and realized he was in a classroom of some sort.
